809 Area code scam

809 area code scam involves luring people into calling expensive 'pay-per-call' numbers. The 809 scam is not limited to numbers starting with 809. The actual number does not matter. As long as the caller can be fooled into thinking an expensive pay-per-call to be a regular, normal priced call - the scam will work.

Not every phone number that starts with 809 is part of this scam. The scam is referred to as "809 scam" because initially the scammers used numbers beginning with the area code - 809. According to Wikipedia.org, the area code belongs to the Dominican Republic.

809 scam is not a new scam. The scam begins with the victim receiving a message to call a certain number. The scammer may send the message through phone, pager, e-mail, advertisement or in any other way. The reason you are asked to call the number may vary, but it will typically be something quite interesting, important or urgent - for example to avoid some bad occurrence, claim a prize, new business opportunity, etc. When the victim calls a 809 number, the scammers will try to keep the caller on the phone as long as possible. The caller will not be informed that he/she is paying high rates for the call or that it is an international call.
