Most of the freelance sites have free as well as paid membership. When you have a paid membership instead of a free membership, employers tend to trust you more. Plus you get other benefits depending on the website, such as exclusive project to bid on, lower or no transaction commission/fees, etc. If you serious about working as a freelancer, it makes sense to opt for premium membership.

Elance

Elance, founded in 1999, is another established website where one can find freelance work. Elance provides plenty of opportunities to freelancers to find jobs they like. Businesses can use Elance to easily find, hire, manage and pay qualified professionals in a mutually beneficial way.

Freelancer.com (formerly Getafreelancer.com) has been active since 2004. Freelancer is another site that has plenty of jobs available to freelancers. Individuals and businesses can also find qualified professionals to hire.

Gofreelance

GoFreelance has been in business for almost a decade. Jobs available include graphic design, web development, software programming, copywriting, article writing and more. Joining Go Freelance is not free. Visit the site for more details.

Getacoder

GetACoder* is one more marketplace where freelancers, particularly software developers, can find jobs to their liking. It is also a great place for companies to outsource IT related work. Membership is either free or premium. Premium buyers save money, no commissions or fees are charged on completed projects. They will also obtain a 10% discount when submitting a premium project. Premium freelancers also do not have to pay the $5 project fee.

* Note: I have received complaint that there was difficulty in withdrawing money from getacoder account. There are some posts on a few forums regarding this issue as well. I have also read that some accounts were suspended without any valid reason. Personally, I have not done any projects on Getacoder as I am not a freelance software professional. So I cannot verify whether they are really defrauding their users. My advice is to proceed with caution.
